Mentorship – “We Rise By Lifting Others”

[This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 6]

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with”? ~Zig Ziglar

I strongly believe this. Looking back over my life and the groups of people I chose to spend my time with, it becomes very apparent (in hindsight) that the group members influenced each other in one way or another.

So which 5 people would you choose to have to yourself in a room where you could ask them any question you like? Who would you choose? and what would you ask them?

Mentorship #10dbc

For me, I can name a good number of people I admire and whose businesses inspire me. My top mentor opportunities would be:

Gary Vaynerchuk

Do you follow GaryVee? This man’s energy blows me away! I love his enthusiasm for life and other people’s success and helping them get there. The blunt way he communicates is refreshing – no sugar coating here, people!. He sees the world through an interesting lens.

My question for GaryVee would be, “What is the biggest road block that new entrepreneurs hit that makes them give up just when they should push harder? And what is your advice to them?”

Sir Richard Branson

This is a man who I believe understands work/life balance. He has built up a huge empire of businesses, while still prioritizing time with family and to do the things he wants and loves to do.

My question for Sir Branson would be, “How do you switch your mind from work mode to life mode without allowing one to get in the way of the other? How do you find and maintain that balance?”

And a second question would be, “What are the initial steps you take to bring a new idea into reality?”

Anthony Robbins

I’d love the opportunity to meet with Tony Robbins. His ability to see through someone’s bullshit(even when they don’t even know it’s bullshit) is amazing! And then his ability to break through that obstacle and rebuild from there to something inspiring and motivating is incredible. My question for him would be, “What can I do better to help inspire and motivate others?”

Natalie Sisson

I suppose this one is a bit obvious, as Natalie is the leader of the blog challenge for which I’m writing this post. I’ve followed Natalie Sisson’s journey for several years now, have done a few of her challenges and her Mastermind program. I actually met her once at her book launch event in Vancouver (do you remember, Natalie?) 😉 , and as you may devise from her videos and podcasts, she’s lovely!

My question for Natalie would be, “How do you choose what to outsource and what to look after yourself? And what is your criteria for your outsourcers?”

I Am the Master of My Own Success

[This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 5]

I’m loving this 10 Day Blog Challenge that Natalie Sisson, the Suitcase Entrepreneur is hosting! (If you want to build a lifestyle business and you aren’t following her, YOU SHOULD BE!) In the past 5 days she has made me think (and write) about things that I would not have otherwise picked out as things that would bring me success and freedom in life and business. So far we have covered and explored:

And today’s assignment is to think about how to set myself up for success.

What does SUCCESS look like?

STEP 1: Create a Productive Workspace

Today, after watching Natalie’s video, I walked into my office to my desk covered in papers, receipts, bills, and all kinds of other things that have been left there in a “dump it and run” fashion. I have recently worked from my back deck, my couch, my kitchen bar stools or even my bed, and I haven’t given my actual designated workspace any love or respect.

So, after listening to Natalie’s very clever advice, I dove into the office and organized the space. I paid and filed the bills, filed my financial statements and receipts for the 3 businesses we are running from our home, and completely uncluttered mySetting Myself Up For Success space so that is became liveable, and more importantly, WORKABLE!

This is what is looks like now…

Setting Myself Up For Success - My Workspace

STEP 2: Make a List

I find I work far better when I work from a hand-written to-do list. When I’m working, I always keep a notepad within arm’s reach to write down all the things I need to do, as well as ideas as they come to me. The list tends to be long and gets overwhelming at times. My plan to make this more manageable is to prioritize this list and then break it down into a list of 3-5 tasks to accomplish per day. It always feels great to cross things off the list.

STEP 3: Choose a Production Time Period

My days tend to be a bit unpredictable, as I like to allow myself the freedom to take a longer do walk when the weather is nice, or to run out for coffee with a friend if the invite pops up, or to help a friend move (this has happened twice with two different friends this week), so my production hours will be different each day, depending on the events of the day. I do, however, ensure that I get at LEAST 4  good production hours in each day.

During those production hours, I find that I work best in 20-minute increments (I never realized that this was a “thing,” until Natalie Sisson identified this as the Pomodoro Technique). I have watched the clock and have noticed that it’s pretty consistent that I lose focus at the 20-25 minute mark. So, I schedule my work time in those increments to chip away at the to-do list mentioned above, beginning with the highest priorities to get them done and dusted first.

After each 20-25 minute increment is done, I get up, walk around, hugs my beasts, refresh my glass of water or tea, and then go back for another session.

STEP 4: Celebrate Successes!

Wits-End-Retreat-wine & pastriesI strongly believe that celebrating successes, even the small ones, is very important to keep people motivated. So, when a series of tasks leads to the completion of a larger scale project, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate not only the goal itself, but also the milestones that get you to the goal.

This acknowledgement could be as simple as a glass of wine or a treat at the end of the day, or social media post to celebrate an accomplishment, or even just telling my partner about it and my excitement around it.

Celebrating success is so important for me to stay motivated, so I make sure this is something I always incorporate into my accomplishments.

What are some of the methods YOU use to be your most productive? (share in the comments below)

Identifying My Inner Superpowers

[This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 4]

Today’s assignment for the 10 Day Blog Challenge is to talk about my superpowers. As I’ve discovered while thinking about this throughout the day, I’ve got quite a few things that I’m good at that could fit into this category, but I’m going to choose just a few.

Self Proclaimed Superpowers.

From the historical content of this blog, I’m going to go with:

I’m Good At PhotographyMariska, the Photographer

It’s no secret, I LOVE taking pictures. And I think I’m pretty good at it too! Over the past 8 years I’ve traveled more than I ever did in my previous life, always with a camera in hand. I just love experiencing different scenes and cultures and people and capturing them in pixels. Sports and event photography tie for a close second place for favorite photography subjects.

I Provide Good Tips & Tricks

Whether it’s travel tips, how to make a drink, how to use a sarong, or how to naturally cure a headache, I’ve got tips for you! I really like writing these types of posts, and some have become quite popular and well-visited on my blog.

I’m Good At Motivating Health and Wellness

This is a fairly new superpower I’ve discovered over the last couple of months, since beginning my Beachbody business. I love sharing my health and fitness journey so as to help others make healthier choices for their own ongoing wellness as well. It’s so inspiring to see others’ success come out of a spark I lit for them. Amazing!

Superpowers Identified By Others

It’s a funny thing to ask people what they think you’re good at. Some of the responses I got were unexpected and surprising. Things I would never claim to be good at, but apparently other people think that I am! I really enjoyed this part of the exercise!

Some of the things other people said I’m good at:

  • Organizing – both physical spaces and business related things
  • Creating websites
  • Social media
  • I’m solution driven and come up with creative ways to solve problems
  • My love for dogs came up as a superpower – this made me happy!
  • I have a huge heart – although, this came from my fiance, so there may be some bias there…
  • Organizing events for groups
  • Stress-free traveling
  • Trying new things and getting out of my comfort zone
  • Self- motivated

If you know me and you have something to add to this list, I would be so appreciative if you would leave a comment below.

It’s not often that people express these things unsolicited, so I’m soliciting! 😉 I would be very interested to learn what you think!

My Perfect Day – Conceive, Believe, Achieve!

[This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 3]

Back January of 2014, I experienced the power of this Napoleon Hill quote:

“What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

I had created a picture in my mind of myself at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. I pictured the perfect 2-week adventure and then worked backwards to make it a reality for myself in a very short time. Through a Kickstarter campaign and the support of my incredible network of family, friends and supporters, IT HAPPENED!

Napoleon Hill Quote

So today, in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 3, I’m going to create a new challenge, goal and adventure for myself to achieve.

My Perfect Day

I wake up, feeling refreshed, to Roxie and Cash (our dogs) cuddling up to me and my man (Adam) in bed. The sun is shining in through the window and we drink a cuppa coffee together in bed before we begin our day.

We get up and drink our superfood nutrition shakes outside on the sun deck and then Adam hops on his bike for his daily 2-hour ride. I spend a few minutes checking and responding to email and then spend 30 minutes doing my daily at-home Beachbody workout in our living room (the dogs try to distract me, but I don’t let them… much…) The dogs are excited for their own workout, which is going to be a great one today!

I use the time while Adam is out riding to work on my business, check in with clients and work on post scheduling for the week. When Adam returns from his ride, we have day trip planned out to Sandcut Beach on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It’s one of our favourite beaches near our house, you can see why here.

The waterfall at Sandcut Beach

We pack a picnic full of clean, healthy foods (and a few treats): quinoa salad with roasted chicken, cheese & crackers, fruit salad, some cut up veggies, a bottle of prosecco, a couple of Soda Stream water bottles.

Oooooh! Today is going to be so GREAT!

During the hour-long drive, we have a little strategy session about The Cycling Co. (our cycling coaching company). We are deciding which coaching camps and clinics we want to offer in the coming months. This chat continues as we hike down to the beach.

There are so many beautiful places on Vancouver Island, so my camera is always in hand to create new content for my blog and flickr feed. (Travel photography is a passionate hobby of mine.)

Dogs playing at China Beach on Vancouver Island

We spend most of the day at the beach. The dogs love it here. They run, and run, and run, and play, and dig, and swim, and chase, and play! They’re in heaven! They will sleep all the way home from pure ecstatic exhaustion.

Adam loves to cook (boy did I luck out with this guy!), so he comes up with some delicious meal for us to share and I do some work on my health business for about an hour while he prepares dinner. I use some of the photos we took today as social media content.

The day winds down in our ocean view backyard, sipping on a glass of French wine, enjoying a wood burning campfire, watching the sunset. We’re planning our next travel adventure to a place neither of us has been before…

Make your dream lifestyle business a reality today!

I’m ready for my mind, my efforts and the universe to work together on this to bring this perfect days to reality. I’ve seen the power of Napoleon Hill’s quote before, and I know I’ll see it again!

“What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Exploring My WHY

[This blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 2]

The best part of any day is the hours that inspire us to do the things that we love. And I find that when I’m able to do the things that I love (spending time outdoors, with my fiance and my dogs, when the weather is nice), I am also more productive in other areas of my life.

The last thing that I want to be doing on a beautiful sunny day is: sit indoors, in a dark office with few to no windows, and stare at a computer screen for 8 hours.

THIS does NOT inspire me.

I would much rather take a couple of hours out of my day for a hike up a mountain, or along a river, or for a walk on a beach or a swim in a lake. And then when I get back to my laptop, I have all sorts of new ideas!

exploring-my-why

What does freedom mean to me?

Freedom means that I meet my deadlines while working on my own schedule. I am able to spend the daytime hours to do the things that I love (when deadlines allow), and then get my work done around those things.

Freedom means that when I sit at my laptop to work, I am in a space that inspires me. This space has lots of light! Whether that’s a coffee shop, my backyard garden, a shared office space, on a ferry, or on a beach in Bali or Costa Rica. One thing I know about myself is that I produce higher quality work when I’m in a well-lit, comfortable space.

Freedom means that I am inspiring my clients! I am helping others become a better version of themselves. I am inspiring people to live a more balanced life, and they are doing it!

Freedom means that I am inspired by those I work with and they help ME become a better version of myself as well and hold me accountable to my own goals and desires.

Leaving the Office Life For Freedom. Again.

I’ve never been someone who thrives in a Monday – Friday, 9-5 office job environment. Being locked in to a schedule that is determined by someone else is not something that inspires me. Logging the time I spend in the washroom or to fill my water glass/tea cup, or being told what I can and cannot do during my lunch breaks does not appeal to me. In fact, this environment sucks the life and soul right out of me.

I chose to work in the online/internet industry to allow myself the flexibility to work from anywhere I chose, so it’s about time I did just that!

In 2013, I left my Vancouver office life, and I was SO inspired! Three years, and a bunch of life events later, I am in a similar position in Victoria.

I’m a little freaked out about it, but that’s ok! Nothing great ever happened while hanging out inside our comfort zones, right?

Finding My Focus With a 10 Day Blog Challenge

Have you ever had a great idea that really inspires you and then when it came to making it a reality, you come up with all kinds of excuses that make you get in your own way of the focus you need to make it happen?

Yep, me too.

As a way to help me find my focus, I’ve joined a 10-day blog challenge with Natalie Sisson, the Suitcase Entrepreneur and this blog post is in response to Natalie’s 10 Day Freedom Plan Blog Challenge Day 1.

finding-my-focus

What Are My Excuses?

Since starting my Beachbody coaching business, I’ve come up with all kinds of excuses as to why I’m not able to put more time and effort into building my health and wellness business.

Excuse #1: There’s so much to do around here. (Procrastination)

With a full time job, 3 big dogs, a side-hustle with my fiance, and a house to maintain, I feel like there’s not enough hours in the day to allow me to do the work required to build my business and I get to every other chore possible before getting to the work.

Excuse #2: I’m So Tired.

Some days I just don’t feel like putting in the effort necessary to build my business. I know what I need to do, I know how to do it, but for some reason I go into lazy piggie mode and use the “I’m so tired” excuse to let myself off the hook for “one more day.” On top of that, after spending 8 hours a day at the office, plus traffic stress getting to and from work, I would rather spend my time with my man or outside with my dogs than add more screen time to my day.

Excuse #3: Rejection Sucks

This is my go-to (and probably the one that freezes me up most of the time). Being told “No,” is tough and so deflating, especially when you KNOW that what you’re trying to help the prospect with is something you KNOW can be successful for them.

Between procrastination, being tired and hating rejection, I’ve built up 3 REALLY nice walls for myself that block me from building a lifestyle of freedom and location independence.

Sometimes I’m Productive Though…

Occasionally I find my focus and I have a spurt of productivity and when I do, I see great results! It’s really odd how I just tend to get in my own way with an “I can do it tomorrow” attitude.

I’m really looking forward to learning from this blogging challenge over the next 10 days. It may be just the kick in the pants that I need to get out of my comfort zone and out into the world of “Freedompreneuring!”

“Yes!” Will Change Your Life!

When was the last time you said YES to something new? When was the last time you said NO and regretted it? These two little words have the power to change your life!

Life changing opportunities come in all  shapes and sizes and usually show up when you least expect it. It could be something as simple as accepting an invitation from a stranger to go for coffee, or it could be more complex like taking on a new health and fitness challenge. Either way, you never know where an opportunity may lead. That cup of coffee may turn into a life-long friendship or even the love of your life, and that new fitness challenge may turn out to be the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself. Like Forrest Gump’s mama used to say, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

Everything You've Ever Wanted is on the Other Side of Fear

New things used to scare me. I used to think that routine was what I needed to live a comfortable life. Then several years ago my life went through a drastic change (heartbreak can do that), and I learned how VERY wrong I was! While building myself and my life back up, I made a promise to myself that I would say YES! when opportunities came knocking. It was uncomfortable at first, but through this commitment to get out of my comfort zone, I’ve discovered so much about myself and about the life that is possible for me!

YES’es That Have Changed My Life:

I said YES!

“Yes!” will change your life!

Life is too short to pass up new opportunities. What’s the worst thing that can happen? Maybe you won’t like it? Maybe you won’t have fun? Maybe you won’t be successful?  But…

WHAT IF you LOVE it??? And…

WHAT IF you achieve MAD SUCCESS??? And…

WHAT IF you EXCEED your goals and expectations???

You will never know unless you get out of your comfort zone, take that first step and say, “YES!”

YES. It’s a powerful little word. “Yes!” will change your life!

So my advice to you: Just Say YES! 🙂

RioReady and the Olympic Spirit Project

The Olympic Spirit ProjectThe closer we get to the Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremonies, the more people are asking whether I’m going to be making the trip to Brazil. After an epic adventure with the Olympic Spirit Project at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, it’s really hard for me not to get on a plane to Rio in a couple of weeks, but sadly, the answer is no, I’m not going.

As much as every bone in my body wants to be there, I’ve made the choice to cheer for my first Olympic Games since becoming officially Canadian from my home country in Victoria, BC. The Olympic Spirit Project will take a little twist for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this summer, and it will be based at Bear Mountain Resort’s RioReady Fan Zone.

Mariska RIchters at the Whistler 2010 Olympic Rings

Why Bear Mountain? Because I live there! And because the resort is the official training centre for 3 of our Canadian Olympic Teams: Mountain Biking, Golf, and Tennis, which makes it a perfect location to get that Olympic energy I’m always looking for. Victoria is actually the training headquarters for eight national sports teams, so I figure, if I’m going to be watching the Rio 2016 Olympics from anywhere that isn’t Rio, my own backyard is the next best place!

Bear Mountain Resort

RioReady Promo PosterThe Rio 2016 Olympic Spirit Project at Bear Mountain’s Rio Ready Fan Zone

The Olympic Spirit Project will be on location at the Bear Mountain Rio Ready Fan Zone in Victoria BC for the duration of the Games capturing fan excitement, celebration, and commentary. Stay tuned to this blog for images and updates from the event. If you’d like to be featured, dress up in your best patriotic costumes (whichever country you’re cheering for) and come on up the Bear Mountain and cheer on your team!

The RioReady Fan Zone has been designed as a place for the Victoria, BC public to come together in to celebrate and cheer on our Canadian Athletes at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Rio, Brazil. RioReady is a family-friendly event, so bring the kids and inspire them to be active in sport for life! What better way to inspire the next generation of athletes to DREAM BIG than to expose them to world class athletes competing on the world stage!

Silken Laumann on RioReady

Last month I attended the RioReady press conference and heard Silken Laumann (Three-time Olympic Medalist – Rowing) and Andrew Byrnes (Gold & Silver Medalist – Rowing) as well as Langford Mayor Stew Young speak about the celebration of community spirit around the Games. (It gave me chills just seeing and seeing so many people speak with such excitement about the Olympics again!)

How I Fit Shakeology Into My Budget

When I considered joining my first Beachbody Challenge and Challenge Pack purchase, my initial thought was, “Wow, that’s not cheap…” But when I considered all of the bad habits I had developed since going back to working a desk job, I decided I wanted to find a way to make Beachbody and Shakeology fit into my budget.

The workouts were a no-brainer. I could buy a workout package and do it over and over at home at no additional cost; this would save me money on monthly gym membership fees. The gym near my house is more expensive than most, as it’s attached to a resort, so eliminating this from my budget was easy to justify. Even if I was to add a new workout every couple of months to switch it up, it would still work out cheaper than a gym membership, and I would have the workouts for life.

Shakeology, was a tougher sell for me. A bag of Shakeology contains 30 days worth of product. Even though Shakeology comes at a great deal when you purchase a Challenge Pack, I thought it wouldn’t be sustainable to continue with it on a monthly basis unless I made some changes to my budget to help it fit in. My goal is to get healthy and fit and if I can save some extra money in the process, then YAY! So I looked at my daily routine and expenses to find a few places where I could cut costs to fit Shakeology into my budget.

How I fit Shakeology into my budget

Where I Found Room to Fit Shakeology Into My Budget

I made a list of the areas where I spend money regularly to see what I could eliminate. Here’s what I came up with:

  • Starbucks – I used to hit up Starbucks (or other small local coffee shops) three or four times a week. Drinks and snacks would add up to somewhere between $3-$8, on most visits. I could make my own coffee at home or at the office, and cutting out the baked goods would be a good start to a healthier diet.
  • Wine – Not only does drinking wine almost daily get expensive (especially when your guy is a sommelier), but there is a lot of sugar in wine (especially white wine) that was going straight to my hips! So I chose to cut down on my wine drinking to only having a glass or two on the weekend. (See! I’m making healthier choices already! Haha!)
  • Energy Bars & Energy Drinks – I stopped buying energy bars. I used to buy energy bars (Clif Bars, Builder Bars, Power Bars) and energy drinks (Rumble, Muscle Milk), and protein poder shakes (Vega Sport) as quick, easy and healthy(?) snacks. But at around $3+ a pop, these things add up fast, especially if you’re consuming them almost daily!
  • Eating Out – I don’t tend to eat out at lunch time much, but my guy and I LOVE going out for good food! I chose to cut our restaurant budget in half and cook more fun and delicious (and healthy) meals at home. This alone freed up the money I would need to fit Shakeology into my budget – and added a fun couples cooking activity to our lives too!

The next thing considered in my Beachbody/Shakeology purchase decision was the 30-day money back guarantee. If you decide that you are not 100% satisfied in any way with the product, you can return it for a full refund – even if the bag is empty, you just send back the empty bag! And with that, I had absolutely no reason not to at least give it a try!

How I fit Shakeology into my budget

Then I found out later that there are discounts available to those who choose to sign up to become a Beachbody Coach! You can be an active coach or a discount coach, either way, you get a 25% discount on your Shakeology and other Beachbody purchases! (If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a Beachbody Coach or want to sign up, feel free to contact me.)

Are You on the Fence About Beachbody or Shakeology?

If you’re on the fence about giving Shakeology a try, and the cost is your main concern, I encourage you to have a look at areas of your routine where you could cut a few costs, especially costs that will benefit your health at the same time. After drinking Shakeology everyday for almost 2 months now plus the daily 30-minute workouts, I can honestly say that I feel amazing!

Finding room to fit Shakeology into my budget was the best thing I’ve done for my health, fitness and general wellness in quite some time! And all I had to do was give up a few Starbucks treats and energy bars! Easy! And, as L’Oreal says, “I’m worth it!” 🙂
